This would include foods like burritos, egg rolls, enchiladas, pizza, quiches, and sandwiches that are packaged in weights below the 6 oz per labeled serving that qualifies as a “main dish.” Nestlé filed a petition asking for the expansion, noting it would bring consistency to FDA’s and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “lean” labeling regulations and would provide consumers with greater information about the foods they eat.

The Food and Drug Administration may expand its nutrient content claim labeling regulation for “lean” to cover food products categorized as “mixed dishes not measurable with a cup” provided they contain less than 8 g of total fat, no more than 3.5 g of saturated fat, and 80 mg of cholesterol.
