Critics fire back at uniform labeling law

The Center for Science in the Public Interest accused supporters of the proposed National Uniformity for Food Act of an attack on state food laws.

It said the law would pre-empt almost 100 state laws governing carcinogen labeling. CSPI cited a report by the Congressional Budget Office that said the law would adversely affect food safety and labeling requirements in 30 states.

In addition, FDA would spend more than $100 million over 5 years to implement the waivers contained in the legislation. The Association of Food and Drug Officials expressed fear that the law would hamper their abilities to respond to a terrorist attack on the food supply.
