Suits planned by CSPI

The Center for Science in the Public Interest announced it will increasingly turn to the courts to stop deceptive labeling, fraudulent advertising, and the use of dangerous food additives.

CSPI filed suit against Quorn Foods, the company that makes a fungus-based meat substitute and Whole Foods Market, Quorn’s biggest food retailer, asking that a warning be placed on food packages and on freezer cases. CSPI alleges that Quorn’s product can cause an allergic reaction in some people. In a separate action, Quaker Foods headed off a planned lawsuit by agreeing to changes in the labeling of some of its oatmeal and grits products to more clearly state that the products are artificially flavored.

According to CSPI, FDA and the Federal Trade Commission have done a poor job enforcing the laws. “So long as the FDA keeps napping, we’ll be hauling more and more food companies into court to protect consumers from fraud,” said CSPI executive director Michael Jacobson.
