No label change, say two juice makers

Coca-Cola North America, manufacturers of Minute Maid orange juice, and Tropicana, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, Inc., rejected a call by the Florida Department of Citrus to change the labeling on packages of “light” orange juice after studies showed consumers were confused about the juice content of the products.

Both companies claimed their labels were sufficiently clear.

The department is said to be considering filing a “citizen’s complaint” with FDA to force companies to disclose the percentage of juice content on the front label. It also will pursue a new FDA regulation mandating front-panel juice content for all beverages claiming to be juice.
