Net carb labeling

The Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition is working on draft guidance for labeling of net carbohydrates. The draft will be based on its report on obesity, which had a central thesis that “calories count.”In response to the report, the Grocery Manufacturers of America’s president and CEO C.

Manly Molpus responded to the agency saying that GMA would support a recommendation that any declaration of the net carbohydrate content on a food’s principal display panel (except a food that meets FDA’s definition of low calorie) be “directly accompanied by a prominent declaration either of the calories per serving, or of a prominent statement that refers to the Nutrition Facts box for calorie information, or of a prominent statement that otherwise refers to the importance of calories.”
