No special labeling for clones foreseen

FDA would not require labels on products from cloned animals if they are considered as safe as traditional food, according to an FDA regulatory review scientist speaking at a biotech conference in late June.

He said FDA would issue a risk assessment of the new technology that might serve as the basis for FDA guidelines. If so, products from cloned animals might be available by next year.

“If we find no problems with the products, we have no legal basis to require labels or have companies differentiate between them,” said John Matheson.
