TRANS-FAT LABELING

In July, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Food and Drug Administration issued a regulation requiring manufacturers to list trans-fatty acids, or trans fat, on the nutrition facts panel of foods and some dietary supplements, beginning Jan.

1, 2006.

FDA estimates that by 2009, trans-fat labeling will have prevented from 600 to 1겨 cases of coronary heart disease and 250 to 500 deaths per year. FDA is also requesting comments on whether it should consider statements about trans fat, either alone or in combination with saturated fat and cholesterol, or as a footnote in the Nutrition Facts panel.
