COO labeling for seafood

The Alabama House is considering country-of-origin labeling legislation that would place new restrictions on seafood processors that use imported seafood in finished food products sold in the state.

In comments to the state legislature, the American Frozen Food Institute said it believes "any additional country-of-origin marking requirements for frozen foods would violate international trade rules, confuse consumers, subject AFFI-member companies to large and unjustified costs to segregate ingredients and to maintain an impractical variety of label stock, and potentially limit the ability of these companies to compete in essential export markets."

In addition, AFFI said the pending bill violates the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution and U.S. obligations to its trading partners. AFFI said voluntary country, state, or regional markings can be used by some companies in an effective marketing strategy.
