FDA continues consumer surveys

FDA has asked the Office of Management and Budget to continue its consumer surveys on food and dietary supplement labeling issues. The agency said that determining how consumers are likely to interpret various claims, warnings, disclaimers, caution statements, and notices that might appear on a label is important in the formulation of labeling policies.

Testing actual or proposed label statements with typical consumers in realistic situations shows what the label statements are actually communicating.

FDA plans to collect information from telephone, mail, shopping mall interviews, and Internet surveys annually. Those participating in the survey provide background information and respond to package labels that contain variations of label statements to be tested. Measures include “both self-reported comprehension and acceptance as well as direct behavioral measures of consumer use and understanding of the package label.”
