The act would require grocers to label the country of origin of meat, fruits, and vegetables. The Food Industry Trade Coalition, a 21-member group composed of trade associations, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and Consumers for World Trade, sent a letter to senators urging them to oppose any such effort, noting that existing requirements for country-of-origin labeling are sufficient. Proponents say the bill is based on a consumer’s right to know, but opponents say it only burdens retailers without offering any meaningful benefit to consumers. Companies that see value in touting the country of origin are free to do so through voluntary marketing, said FITC.
