Canada chimes in on biotech labeling

Canada is among the latest countries to take action on labeling of genetically modified food products. In September, the Agriculture Ministry announced it is seeking to develop a voluntary labeling standard for these foods.

A voluntary standard by one of its leading trade partners is good news for the U.S., which has generally opposed such labeling. A number of nations, led by the European Union, are instituting mandatory labeling requirements. South Korea announced it will designate items that must bear labels indicating they are genetically modified, and it will issue detailed guidelines by the end of 1999.
