Irradiation label copy suggested

Lending its voice to the continuing battle of how to label irradiated products, GMA told FDA that while it opposes any kind of mandatory labeling, if special labels are required, they should tell consumers that the food has been irradiated for their safety.

The association proposed the following label language: "cold pasteurization (irradiated) to make food safer from harmful bacteria." GMA also proposed that FDA adopt a three-year sunset provision for any amended labeling, coupled with intensified consumer education. Presumably, once consumers understand the value of irradiation, special labeling no longer will be necessary (see related story, p. 58).
