Bottled water labeling?

Americans are drinking more bottled water, many believing it to be more healthful, but they may be missing out on the fluoride needed to combat tooth decay, warns the Chicago Dental Society.

The amount of fluoride in bottled water varies from brand to brand, and few bottlers provide information on fluoride content on the label. FDA requires companies to list fluoride content only when fluoride has been added, although the amount need not be listed. Ironically, FDA requires a warning on toothpaste tubes of the risk to children of dental fluorosis (harmless discoloration of teeth) if they consume too much toothpaste, although the label does not specify how much is too much. Consumers and the dentists who counsel them need information on the amount of fluoride in bottled water, said dentist Mary Starsiak, DDS, adding the problem could be solved by listing the fluoride content on packaging.
