Codex divided on biotech labeling

The Codex Committee on Food Labeling appears divided over which biotech food labeling recommendations to adopt. It is choosing whether to emulate the U.S.

FDA policy or the stricter mandatory regs required by European governments. Codex is the primary international policy-setting organization for food safety. At a recent meeting, Codex was urged by the International Council of Grocery Manufacturers Associations to adopt the U.S. approach. Speaking for the council, Claire Regan of the Grocery Manufacturers of America also opposed a proposal to expand the number of nutrients to be included on nutrition labels, warning it was a disincentive for the food industry to provide voluntary nutrition information, especially on products with limited label space. The council also urged the committee to allow manufacturers to promote legitimate health claims on food product labels. The committee agreed to continue discussions on biotech food labeling recommendations. c
