A recent report by the General Accounting Office stated that increased consumption of imported foods further heightens the risk of illness. Responding to the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations' request for comment on imported food labeling, the Food Marketing Institute emphatically stated that country-of-origin labeling does not address food safety in any way. Responding to the GAO report, the National Food Processors Assn. also urged that government requirements be based on safety, not origin, of food.
