The commission agreed to propose to the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers that they approve an amendment delaying implementation of the metric-only rule for another 10 years. As a quid pro quo, the commission expects actions by the U.S. indicating it is serious about going metric. That means U.S. manufacturers that export wouldn't be completely off the metric hook. Indeed, the EC would like to see efforts to eventually amend the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act to eliminate the requirement for dual labeling in favor of metric-only labeling. A decision on whether to approve the 10-year delay is expected to occur in September.
Metric-only labeling delayed
A "significant breakthrough" has been reported in negotiations between the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the European Commission to delay implementation of Metric 2000, a European directive requiring metric-only labeling on products sold in Europe by the year 2000.
