More action on milk labeling

In an effort to promote consistency and clarity in milk labeling, the Milk Industry Foundation (MIF) petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to establish the term "skim" as a synonym for "nonfat" for labeling milk, acidified milk, cultured milk and sweetened condensed milk.

In its petition, MIF noted that FDA, in practice, has long sanctioned synonymous use of "skim" and "nonfat" in milk product labeling, since both meet the standard of containing less than 0.5 grams of fat per serving. Some milk processors use "skim", while others use "nonfat" in labeling identical products. The two terms have come to be synonymous in consumers' minds, the trade group noted.
