Constitution by imposing undue burdens on interstate commerce. In the past, courts have struck down similar laws in other states. Of bigger concern to the food industry is the prospect of a crazyquilt of state country-of-origin labeling laws. The U.S. Congress is currently considering several bills requiring country-of-origin labeling on imported meat and poultry, as well as front panel country-of-origin labeling for frozen produce. The food industry is vigorously fighting all these measures.
State labeling law opposed
In Louisiana, Governor M. J. Foster was urged by GMA to veto a State Senate bill requiring country-of-origin labeling for meat products. In its letter, GMA noted that federal law already requires identifying country-of-origin of imports and that additional state requirements could violate the Commerce Clause of the U.S.
