Linux for machine control?

Hard-core techie types won’t want to miss this spirited discussion of whether Linux is ready for industrial machine control. Linux is an open-source operating system that is maintained by a community of volunteer programmers.

As such, it is free, meaning machine builders do not have to pay a royalty for each copy they install. Also, it has a good reputation for stability. By the same token, it wasn’t really designed with machine control in mind, though a few early adopters are beginning to tinker with it for this purpose.
