Invisible bar code technology

Invisible bar code technology from Eastman Chemical (Kingsport, TN) employs inks with compositions based on near-infrared fluorophores (NIRFs). NIRFs fluoresce in the near-infrared region and are thus invisible to the naked eye.

They can be used as invisible markers to encode information for later detection by laser light. Possible applications are those where label space is minimal, including packaging for CDs, audio and video tapes and cosmetics. The technology works with a variety of substrates, and is said to work at commercial printing and scanning speeds.
