Specialized Packaging Group (SPG), a provider of sustainable protective packaging solutions, launched EcoFlex™, a patent-pending, first-to-market molded pulp solution that enables fully custom protective packaging without the tooling costs and lead times of traditional methods.

“SPG is the first to offer custom molded pulp packaging that eliminates expensive tooling which can save customers up to $10,000 per design,” said Joe Gumbis, Chief Commercial Officer, SPG. “The lower cost makes the solution accessible to a broader range of customers, including those with lower production needs and opens the door for more companies to move away from foam toward more sustainable materials.”

Img 6718SPGUnlike traditional molded pulp trays, EcoFlex uses modular, square pulp components laminated onto corrugated structures, eliminating the high costs and long lead times of conventional tooling. The result is faster, more sustainable protective packaging delivered in as little as one week, a 75 to 80 percent reduction from the typical four-to-six-week timeline.

In addition to the elimination of tooling investment, the use of EcoFlex delivers a range of key benefits, including significantly accelerating turnaround times and reducing production timelines by 75 to 80 percent, from four to six weeks to as little as one week.

EcoFlex is made from 100% recycled fibers and is fully recyclable and biodegradable. Engineered to deflect under pressure and rebound to absorb shock during transit, it meets ISTA shipping standards and serves as a sustainable alternative to foam packaging, including EPS and thermoformed plastics.

“In addition to improving packaging, we’re accelerating our customers’ ability to bring products to market while meeting corporate sustainability goals,” Gumbis said.
