New ELAU PacDrive™ servos add value to packaging machines

ELAU’s new SH Series servomotors add value to packaging machinery using the PacDrive™ automation system through salient pole winding technology. They are purpose built designed specifically for the dynamic and environmental requirements of the latest generation of mechatronic packaging machine design.

Inherently increased cost/performance

The new designs utilize salient pole winding technology for motors that are more compact and cost effective smoother running with higher power density nearly 50% lower rotor inertia low cogging torque quieter operation and higher resistance to winding damage.

The new winding design results in a symmetric magnetic field distribution that eliminates magnetic interference on the rotors resulting in up to 140% longer life. Length is reduced by 30% Windings are epoxy encapsulated for increased heat dissipation mechanical integrity torque production and resistance to shock vibration and moisture.

Power range and frame sizes

They are available from 0.5 to 90 nm (144 nm when fan cooled) continuous holding torques in 55 70 100 140 and 205 mm flange sizes.

Standard features

Development of barrel-type connectors of equivalent quality to junction boxes results in faster mounting inherent protection against reversing the polarity of the connections 310° connector rotation for mounting flexibility IP67 protection for the connections and easier motor replacement in the field. Motors and cables are CE/cUL/UL certified.

Popular options

Various shaft configurations cooling feedback and shaft sealing options are offered including a permanent magnet holding brake shaft key IP 65 rated Viton® shaft seal IP 67 rated barrier pressure system external fan cooling water cooling and single or multiturn SinCos encoder.

Backward compatibility

As with other components of the PacDrive family the new motors are backward compatible an important practical consideration. The new motors are compatible with existing PacDrive installations including the same mounting flange dimensions PacDrive MC-4 digital drives ranging from 5 to 50 amps continuous output and all PacDrive MAx-4 C and P Series automation controllers.

Smart nameplates

The new motors continue to feature ELAU’s smart nameplate technology allowing the servo drive to read a chip embedded in the motor and self-configure simplifying both startup and motor replacement. The drive will automatically adjust to a motor with different characteristics than the original reducing the amount of spares stock required for a given machine.

About ELAU

ELAU equips over $1 billion worth of the world’s best machines annually with over 25 PacDrive systems already deployed in packaging machinery worldwide. PacDrive is the first truly integrated automation architecture capable of performing the functions of PLC motion control robotics temperature control PLS MES data interface and more in a single standards-based software environment.
