More backlash for China? UK company to produce PLA at home. . .

British sausage company Debbie & Andrew's wants to bring home production for starch-based polylactic acid—PLA.

The company has been importing the material for its new packaging from China. Now, company co-founder Andrew Keeble wants "to encourage British farmers to grow this stuff. We don't want to import it." In addition to PLA plastic trays, the company uses cardboard sleeves made from FSC-accredited paper to complete packaging for its sausages. "All retailers are moving towards this sort of packaging," Keeble adds. The company also wants to encourage better local recycling, hoping the PLA trays will be composted at local recycle facilities.
