P&G not backing off on environment-friendly packaging

Despite diminishing public concern over environment-friendly packaging, Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, OH, plans no changes in its pursuit. In fact, the company pointed out that its newly retired environmental guru, Tom Rattray, has been replaced by two people, Dr.

Robert J. Shimp, associate director of environmental quality worldwide, and by Margaret Gerber, environmental specialist in environmental quality. In November (p. 2), PW erroneously reported that Rattray had not been replaced. "Basically, the two of us, in addition to an international network of other people within P&G, have overall responsibility for advising the company on the environmental aspects of packaging," Shimp says, "and for maintaining dialogue with outside organizations as Tom has done in the past." The company "wants to make sure no one gets the impression we're backing off any of the commitments that we made in the past. Or that we think the whole environmental aspect of packaging is unimportant simply because public interest in it has diminished," states Shimp. He enclosed an informative report, "1996 P&G Environmental Progress Update," that may be available by faxing a request to P&G at 513/983-6312.
