Hornbarger cited source reduction efforts by manufacturers of grocery products, noting that while the U.S. population grew 14% between 1980 and 1993, grocery product packaging as a percentage of municipal solid waste fell from 15 to 12% during that time. In addition, grocery package recycling nearly doubled from 1980 to 1990 and rose another 30% from 1990 to 1993, the latest year for which data is available. These trends are likely to continue.
