As announced in mid-August, the Packaging Education Forum, Arlington, VA, will induct three career professionals into the PEF Hall of Fame on November 11. The ceremony will take place during PEF's Leadership Awards dinner and ceremonies Tuesday, November 7, 2000 at the Chicago Hilton & Towers. The event, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., is being held during Pack Expo Intl., which runs November 5-9 in Chicago's McCormick Place.
The inductees, selected by the PEF membership from a field of 12 nominees this year, are Robert S. Forsyth, retired vp of National Starch & Chemical Co.; inventor/consultant William Heller Jr.; and John M. Johnston, retired president/ceo of Doboy Machinery.
Robert S. Forsyth, CPP: Mr. Forsyth retired from National Starch & Chemical Co. as divisional vp-Intl. Adhesives in '98. An internationally recognized authority on adhesives, his packaging career spans 45 years. He holds a patent on hot melt moistening adhesives and has written technical articles on packaging and adhesive applications in numerous industry publications. He has served as national chairman of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP), where he was also Member of the Year and was inducted into its College of Fellows. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical engineers, TAPPI and the Adhesives & Sealant Council. He has a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Lafayette College and a M.S. in industrial engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology.
William C. Heller, Jr.: His life-long involvement in packaging began with Milprint, Inc., a pioneer in flexible packaging materials where Heller served in manufacturing and management until the early '60s when he established his own consulting business. He has established scholarships at various universities including the William Heller, Sr. scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, which was established through the PEF and benefits packaging majors needing financial assistance. He is an inventor and co-inventor of numerous U.S. and foreign patents in the areas of packaging, pasltics, bonding of materials and imaging. He has served as founding chairman of the National Flexible Packaging Assoc. and was also involved with the Technical Association of Graphic Arts and the Gravure Foil Label Assoc.
John M. Johnston: During his lifetime career, his contributions to education have been continuous and substantial. He is retired president and ceo of Doboy Machinery, Inc. He is recognized as a founding organizer in establishing programs designed to train individuals for employment in packaging at Dunwoody Institute, Hennepin Technical College and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. During his tenure as Chairman of PMMI's Education Committee and as a member of PMMI's Board of Directors, he initiated numerous self-instruction programs to assist training personnel in almost every technical school that has a packaging lab.
