Guidance on irradiation labeling

FDA has issued guidance explaining how to petition the agency to request approval of labeling that is not false or misleading for foods that have been irradiated.

Although FDA is asking for public comment, the guidance goes into effect immediately to comply with the terms of the Farm Bill passed in May 2002. FDA said the guidance represents its current thinking but that an alternate approach may be used if it satisfies the requirements of the law.
