CSPI senior scientist Dr. Margo Wootan, citing a recent study, said trans-fat raises cholesterol levels as much as saturated fat does. CSPI called on food manufacturers to disclose the amount of trans-fat hidden in their products. So far, FDA hasn't acted on a CSPI petition asking that the agency require packagers to list the amount of trans-fat on food labels. CSPI also petitioned FDA to ban claims like "no cholesterol" or "low saturated fat" for foods that are not also low in trans-fat. Several prominent researchers also have urged FDA to require trans-fat labeling.
