When is a source tag dead and when is it sleeping? These and other pertinent questions are answered in Electronic Surveillance Packaging: An Outline of the State of the Industry. The latest publication from Herndon, VA-based Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP), this 75-page outline stems from findings of a recent white paper, which was developed by an IoPP committee representing "the six major stakeholder groups." These included EAS manufacturers, manufacturers of packaging materials and equipment, packagers, retailers and consumers. The committee presented an unbiased outline of major technologies available, perspectives from both the manufacturers and retailers, as well as a glossary of terms to help readers decipher EAS terminology. Acousto-magnetic, electro-magnetic and radio-frequency technologies are overviewed, as well as corresponding systems, including detection and deactivation/reactivation systems, and label composition and features. Source tag application onto packages, as well as the limitations of each system are explained. The manufacturers' perspective describes the constraints of capital investment, and the integration of EAS technology onto a high-speed line. Also listed are necessary improvements in technology. Retailers discuss which retail sectors are using what system, as well as requirements for retailer installation. IoPP clearly states in the report's preface that Electronic Surveillance Packaging is for educational purposes, and is not meant to set standards. It may be, however, one of the most concise reports on EAS available today. The publication is available from IoPP for $35; a discount is available for bulk orders.
