New CR closure designed for all ages

Walgreens Co. of Deerfield, IL, has started using the Comfort Cap(TM) on all its prescription vials. The closure is said to offer the child-resistance of other CR closures while it's easy to open for arthritic adults who often struggle with CR closures.

In 1968, Walgreens was the first to offer a CR closure. As great as the push-and-turn cap has been for the last 30 years, Walgreens has always been on the lookout for an improvement. Now the company says it's found it.

The Comfort Cap is actually part of a vial/closure system that manufacturer Owens-Brockway (Toledo, OH) calls the 1-Clic(TM) vial. To open, the user holds down a tab molded into the sidewall of the vial and twists open the cap (left photo). Closing is a matter of twisting the cap on until it clicks.

The closure can also be flopped over to convert it into an easy-open cap without the CR feature (right photo). "Not every household has children," says Michael Polzin, manager of media relations at Walgreens, "and they may not feel the need for a child-resistant cap. With this cap, we can provide both types of caps in a single cap."

Owens-Brockway injection molds Walgreens' new closure of high-density polyethylene. The vial, also injection-molded by Brockway, is made of polypropylene. Walgreens uses three different-sized caps fitting seven vial sizes.
