Putting color additives onto labels

FDA wants processors and manufacturers of butter, cheese and ice cream to declare FD&C Yellow No. 6 by name in the ingredient list on labels of products containing this color additive.

According to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act, artificial colors used in these products are not required to be listed by name on labels, "except to ensure safe conditions of use." FDA concluded, based on recent scientific evidence, that FD&C Yellow No. 6 is associated with allergic-type reactions in some individuals. To give industry time to use up existing packaging and reduce compliance costs, FDA has proposed a two-year period after the rule is finalized for final implementation.
