Placon receives ISO 14001 certification

Placon has announced that it has obtained certification to ISO 14001:2004, the international standard that specifies a process for controlling and improving an organization's environmental performance.

Awarded by BSI Management System, one of the world's largest certification bodies, for Placon’s environmental management system, this ISO 14001 certification covers all of Placon’s business lines, including food, retail and medical markets for both thermoforming and the company’s EcoStar® extruded roll stock materials.

"Our large customers are increasingly expecting state-of-the-art environmental practices from their suppliers. And consumers increasingly want to know that their packaging providers are committed to environmental best practices," explains Laura Stewart, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "Placon’s ISO 14001 certification proves we are committed to meeting our customers' expectations and continually setting future goals to improve."

Placon’s environmental management system provides a systematic framework for the company to identify the environmental impact of its activities and products. It also establishes commitments and targets, and monitors results so Placon can continuously improve its performance.

"As a company focused on making packaging and sheet from reclaimed recycled PET, we are acutely aware that what we do today will affect future generations," Ms. Stewart said. "We work hard to make our environmental footprint as small as possible and strive to continually improve our environmental performance in every facet of our operations."

Highlights of the company's efforts include:

•    Build new recycling facility to wash and grind post-consumer bottles and thermoforms
•    Reduce compressed air leaks
•    Install energy efficient lighting in production areas
•    Reduce waste to the landfill
•    Increase (identify new) internal recycling opportunities
