Australian beer goes green...

Australian-based Foster's beer has launched a sustainably produced and packaged premium beer brand for its domestic market.

Cascade Green beer has obtained certification from the Australian government for being a greenhouse friendly product. The brewer, Tasmania-based Cascade Brewery, met requirements for certification by purchasing carbon offsets for its operations, as well as implementing environmental packaging initiatives. Combining the purchase of carbon offsets with undisclosed packaging initiatives illustrates just how complex going green can be. In Europe, a Brewers of Europe spokesperson noted that beer brewing is generally seen as a clean industry. Still, green issues such as CO2 emissions and water use, need to be addressed in order to compete with wine and spirits producers.
