Debunking more myths

The popular notion that the nation's solid waste stream is larded with disposable cups, plates, wraps and other foodservice packaging products took another hit in a new study by Franklin Associates, Ltd., a solid waste research group, for the Foodservice & Packaging Institute (FPI).

Always miniscule, the volume of foodservice disposable products accounts for a mere 1.51% of the municipal solid waste volume. This reflects a 5-year decline in volume for these products. FPI President Joseph W. Bow attributes the decline to an industry-wide effort to reduce waste through source reduction, recycling, composting and other environmentally responsible disposal practices.
