South Dakota 'certifies' beef

A new South Dakota law establishes an official state trademark or seal for beef packages that indicates the meat came from South Dakota-born cattle, were tracked electronically, and raised according to the standards of the South Dakota Certified Beef Program.

Consumers can visit an Internet site and use a code on the label to track an animal from birth to the meatpacking plant. All cattle wear an electronic identification tag. Farmers enrolling in the program pay licensing fees, which fund the program and are used for marketing efforts. The program essentially creates a state-branded product.
