Lean or not?

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is asking USDA to ensure the accuracy of the voluntary Nutrition Facts labels on fresh meat and poultry after discovering serious inaccuracies in one company’s label.

CSPI tests found that 28 of 30 Laura’s Lean branded steaks had more fat, saturated fat, and calories than claimed on the label. Also, only one in 14 strip steaks met the guidelines of the American Heart Association’s “heart-check” logo, which they are certified to bear. CSPI described Laura’s nutrition numbers as “off the charts.”

CSPI also asked USDA to require labels to emphasize the number of servings in a given steak. Many consumers may eat an entire steak not realizing they are consuming much more than the recommended four ounces, thereby eating far more fat than that tested in a single serving.
