Sofrigam: Temperature-controlled packaging

Igloo allows patients to transport heat-sensitive medicines from pharmacy to home.

Sofrigam introduces Igloo, an insulated kit consisting of a pouch and a cold source. Igloo provides protection for heat-sensitive medicines at temperatures between +2°C and +8°C for up to one hour, safeguarding them while they are in transit from the pharmacy until they are administered to the patient.

The insulated kit satisfies the following requirements:

• The request from the National Council of Pharmacists to bring to the market a suitable packaging solution with a minimum sustained cooling capacity of 20 minutes, within the temperature range +2°C to +8°C

• The requirements of pharmacists to have access to an insulated package that is easy to prepare (just one procedure at +5°C) and that accommodates any size of heat-sensitive healthcare product at an affordable price

• The necessity of the pharmaceutical industry to maintain the integrity of medicines until they are administered to the patient

• The needs of patients, enabling them to transport their medicines in complete safety without having to handle the insulated package

A heat-sensitive medicine will exceed +8°C in less than 5 minutes. Vaccines, insulin, and other medicines that need to be stored at temperatures of between +2°C and +8°C are sold every day to patients and transported from the pharmacy to their homes without any suitable protection. A heat-sensitive medicine exposed to a mean ambient temperature of +20°C will exceed +8°C in less than 5 minutes.

Fluctuations in the temperature of a healthcare product cannot be detected visually. In the best case the medicine is rendered ineffective, while in the worst case it can become toxic. In order to safeguard the integrity of the product while it is in transit, it is essential to employ a suitable insulated package, even for the shortest journeys.
