Pack Expo press conference explores the Russian packaging market

Many misperceptions exist concerning the packaging market in Russia, according to speakers at a Monday morning press conference at Pack Expo.

Speakers valued the Russian packaging market in 2004 at US$13.29 million, with 17.1% growth from 2003-04. That ranked it ninth globally.

A report from MVK Ltd. said, "The entire Eastern European market is part of the same trend occurring in Russia. With Russia being the largest single economy in the region, it's no wonder with rising investment and consumer confidence that the packaging market will continue to grow faster than any other country in the region.

"Russia, followed by Poland, with Ukraine trailing, will be the fastest-growing markets in the former CIS countries. Some forecasts indicate that the Russian packaging consumption market will reach $18.5 billion by 2009," according the MVK press release. Food is expected to grow 8% a year, reaching $14.5 billion by 2009, with consumer packaging growing almost 8%, and industrial packaging sales by 5% in that time period.

Paper and board represent 39% of the market by material, plastics or polymers 36%, glass 17%, and metal 8%.

Behind the growth are the opening of supermarkets, shopping malls, and specialized retailers.

"In summary," said the report, "the Russian packaging industry has developed significantly the past several years. Manufacturing is growing in all sectors of industry and requiring more and more packaging and packaging equipment. Russian companies are competitive now and know that to be profitable and to grow, they must adopt technologies and equipment that are proven."

A PMMI representative indicated that the June 2006 version of Rosupak, the largest packaging exhibition in Russia, was a success. Next year's event is scheduled for June 26-29, 2007 in Moscow's Crocus Exhibition Center.
