Food packaging furor

Makers of all types of food packaging have formed a coalition to fight costly and unnecessary regulations proposed by FDA under the Bioterrorism Act. FDA proposes to classify food packaging as “food,” thereby subjecting manufacturers to extensive registration, record-keeping, and prior notice requirements.

The idea is to enable FDA to quickly track companies involved in the production, packaging, distribution, or collection of food items in the event of an outbreak of foodborne illness. The coalition maintains this goes beyond what Congress intended when it passed the Act. It has developed an action plan that includes visiting and writing key members of Congress.
