SunOpta's on a growth spurt

Aseptic packaging capabilities are expanding rapidly at this Toronto-based food and beverage manufacturer.

More than one industry observer has predicted that aseptic packaging is due for some significant growth here in the U.S. Few are growing this technology more aggressively than Tornoto-based SunOpta. The paint was scarcely dry on its new aseptic processing and packaging plant in Modesto, CA, when the firm announced the completion of an upgrade and retrofit at its Alexandria, MN, facility. SunOpta says the Alexandria plant is producing natural broth and soup products for a large multinational packaged goods manufacturer.

According to asiafoodjournal.com, the upgrade at the Alexandria plant expands package size capabilities to include 500-mL and 1.5-L packages in addition to existing 1-L and 2-L package sizes.

Together the Alexandria and the Modesto plant have a total capacity of nearly 300 million quarts of soymilk and other aseptic beverages per year.
