Kit package helps patients recover

New XTRAC® Laser Post-Procedure Kit is sold to doctors, who sell the treatment kits to their patients.

Packaged and marketed as the XTRAC Laser Post-Procedure Kit, the three-product system (shown) includes a tissue repair crème, lotion, and water-resistant sun block, all designed to help speed healing for patients following laser skin treatments. The product was unveiled in late April by PhotoMedex, Inc., a Montgomery, PA, developer of proprietary excimer laser and fiber optic systems, as well as other dermatological products.

The company outsources skin-care product manufacturing, but assembles packaged kit products onsite. No additional packaging machinery was necessary for the job. “The [packaging] materials were chosen by marketing after working with the vendor’s engineering group,” explains John Schaffer, senior director, XTRAC marketing and business development. No packaging specifications or suppliers were revealed.

One of the issues faced in this product market, he says, “is having the physicians and office personnel educate their patients and sell the value that this kit provides so that patients will be motivated to spend their cash on these ‘non-insurance-reimbursed items.” Asked if packaging can play a role in addressing the issue, Schaffer says, “Sure, a highly professional package helps communicate our message.”
