FDA delays slow use of MAP in seafood industry. . .

About 10 years ago, seafood manufacturers anticipated modified atmosphere packaging would be the "packaging technique of the future." But tough restrictions from the FDA have limited its use by US seafood processors. Canadian firm Atlantic Aqua Farms has used MAP technology successfully in Canada and throughout Europe. The Canadian government has approved their system, but they are still awaiting FDA approval. One US firm, CPT Plastics has come up with an FDA-approved alternative. The Go Green tray uses a film lid that keeps seafood fresh for about eight days. Still, that's 10 days less than seafood packaged using MAP technology.
