Several members of the anti-tobacco team—activists from Ghana and elsewhere, physicians, and media moguls—are working together to "protect the lives of non-smokers from the activities of those who have chosen to die through smoking." The bill advocates bans on advertising of tobacco and legal liability for manufacturers.
In Canada, however, the dramatic campaign featuring cigarette packages with photos of cancerous lungs, diseased hearts and mouth cancer—which was launched in 2001—has lost its effectiveness, according to one study. The Canadian Cancer Society has acknowledged that the warnings have become "a bit stale," admitting that "no major consumer product company leaves their television ads unchanged for seven years."
