Europe chemical registration affects packagers. . .

The EU's Registration Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH) announced new regulations starting June 1 affecting packaging materials such as pulp and paper, plastics, metals, glass, coatings, printing inks, and adhesives.

The burden rests with business, not government, to demonstrate any chemicals used in manufacturing and processing are safe. All chemicals must be registered, and dangerous ones replaced with safer alternatives. Food processors lobbied heavily to get some chemicals exempted.
