Growth forecasted for corrugated packaging

Pira Intl.'s (www.piranet.com) market report, The Future of Global Markets for Corrugated Packaging—strategic five-year forecasts, predicts the consumption of corrugated paperboard packaging will reach 140 million tons in 2011, with central and eastern Europe expected to show compounded annual growth rate in the next five years of 11.9%. The increase followed a drop in demand in 2003 caused by supply-and-demand weakness.

Growth in western Europe has been lower than expected, the report says, due to increased migration of manufacturing to lower-cost
facilities. Other findings include:

• The Asia-Pacific region shows growth of 17%, powered by China and India.

• The food and beverage segment accounted for one-third of corrugated consumption last year, and is expected to rise to 35% by 2011.

• Electrical appliances and machinery accounted for 10.1% of corrugated consumption.

The study sells for £3,500.
