California container recycling fails to meet minimums

The California Integrated Waste Management Board ruled in late July that plastic containers failed to meet the required 25% recycling rate in years 2000 and 2001.

The CIWMB annual survey reported that the recycling rate for rigid plastic containers increased from 17% in ‘99 to a “best” estimated rate of 23.8% in 2000. Failure to reach 25% means that manufacturers are required to source-reduce, use recycled material, or make containers reusable, or face fines.

CIWMB already is requesting compliance data from 1귔 companies, and moving toward more sanctions against 200 companies. This year, CIWMB staff will investigate up to 100 companies.

More information about the California regulations—and those in Europe—will be presented by Raymond Communications (College Park, MD) at a one-day program September 13, immediately after Pack Expo Las Vegas. Called “Global packaging mandates: How to design for the environment and save money,” the workshop is co-sponsored by Packaging World magazine. (AO)
