Pine wood packing materials

China has informed the U.S. Department of Agriculture that it found the pine wood nematode in U.S. shipments containing wood packing material. Chinese law requires quarantine of this pest, prompting USDA's Animal, Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to caution U.S.

exporters to China eliminate the possibility of the bug being transported in their wood packing materials. Otherwise, shipments could be delayed or subject to fumigation before being released by Chinese authorities. The U.S. took similar action against China when it banned all forms of raw-wood packaging from China to prevent infestations of the Asian longhorn beetle. Chinese exporters must certify that either packaging contains no wood or the wood has been treated to destroy the beetles and their larvae.
