J&J Begins Settling Talc Lawsuits

The company is currently battling 20,000+ lawsuits that claim its talc powder causes cancer.

A recent Bloomberg article discussed the latest in the ongoing battle between Johnson & Johnson and consumers claiming their talc powder causes cancer. The company has agreed to pay out more than $100 million to resolve over 1,000 lawsuits.

“In certain circumstances, we do choose to settle lawsuits, which is done without an admission of liability and in no way changes our position regarding the safety of our products,” Kim Montagnino, a J&J spokeswoman, said in an emailed statement. She said “scientific evidence” supports that position. “Our talc is safe, does not contain asbestos and does not cause cancer,” Montagnino said.

With roughly 20,000 lawsuits pending, this is the first set of settlements in the four years of litigation.
