Integrated packer gets new breed of modular servo controls

Three-in-One case erector/packer/sealer is the first to employ iSH servo modules. Benefits include simplified mounting, reduced component costs, and smaller controls cabinet.

In its Three-in-One packer, Goodman Packaging Equipment (www.goodmanpkg.com) is the first to use PacDrive iSH Series Intelligent Servo Modules from Elau (www.elau.com). Unlike a conventional servo motor and drive, this self-contained servo module receives all power and communications from its own hybrid cable coming from a nearby distribution module. No separate encoder cables are needed, and each module is fully synchronized through a digital motion bus running in its single hybrid cable. A central, shared power supply feeds these remotely located distribution modules.
The net result is reduced complexity and installed cost, says Goodman. Instead of a cabinet filled with servo drives and cable connections, only a single PacDrive automation controller and power supply are located in the electrical cabinet. The servos and their distribution modules are installed around the machine, right at the point of use. And because they are IP-65-rated, they’re fully capable of routine washdown.
Goodman’s machine is called “Three-in-One” because it erects a corrugated RSC (Regular Slotted Carton), top loads up to 100 flexible or rigid packs/min, and then closes and hot-melt seals the case. By integrating three packaging functions in a single, unified frame, Goodman is able to provide synchronized packaging in minimal floor space.
“This controls solution allows us to have a smaller controls panel and further reduce the size of our already compact machine,” says Billy Goodman, president of Goodman Packaging. “It also means less wiring. Anytime you can reduce panel space and simplify wiring, it’s a step in the right direction.”
Currently, the Three-in-One machine can handle a maximum package size of 15”L x 12” W, and maximum case size is 20” L x 13”W x 12”H. Changeover time is under 10 minutes, says Goodman.
“With what we learned on this project,” he adds, “we see further opportunities, not only for savings in wiring and installed cost, but also for increases in speed and flexibility.”
