Premeasured packets spice up consumer kitchens

One-teaspoon-size packets of organic spices make measurement simple and keep flavors fresh.

Self-proclaimed “cardaMoms” Katie Luber and Sara Engram, founders of TSP Spices, Inc., Atlanta, have vowed to bring “Spice Enlightenment” to consumers with the introduction of premeasured, 1–teaspoon spice packets, contained in attractive storage tins that keep ingredients fresh and convenient.

“If you’ve ever searched a cluttered cabinet for one elusive spice and felt as if you are conducting an archeological dig… If you found that wayward spice and realized you bought it so long ago it had about as much flavor as last summer’s grass clippings… If you know how it feels to reach a critical point in your recipe and discover the measuring spoon is missing in action… Then you’re ready for spice enlightenment,” reads the company’s press materials.

While Luber and Engram declined to be interviewed for this article, their Web site, www.tspspices.com, provides a wealth of information on their line of 24 pure, organic spices, introduced nationwide in spring 2007. Free of fillers and additives, and non-irradiated, the spices are packed for single use in 1-teaspoon quantities in dainty, flexible-film stick-packs, so “each time you open a packet, the contents are fresh and full of flavor,” the company notes.

Tins make storage simple

Individual spice packs are sold in silver tins that hold 12 sticks apiece and are designed to make spice storage attractive and neat. The tins, available for $9 apiece, are also said to protect their contents from the damaging effects of light and air.

For those consumers wanting to build their spice reserves quickly, TSP Spices offers six Spice Collections: Green, Sweet, and Spice Basics, each comprising six spice varieties; and Savoir Fare, Sun Shine, and Sweet Heat, with three tins each. The three- and six-tin collections, priced at $16 and $42, respectively, are held in sturdy cartons that display the tins standing vertically, with the spice varieties clearly labeled on their “spines,” for easy organization in the cabinet, or on the counter.

Package graphics are tasteful and spare, with each spice represented by a rich deep, earth-toned color. Shown on labels and embossed on the silver tins is TSP Spices’ “mascot,” the Spice Finch, which legend says found its way from Asia to Europe by following the spice ships.

TSP Spices are sold in gourmet, gift, and grocery stories across the country and through the company’s Web site.
